The Safety Release Summer Intensive (SRSI) highlights the principles of Safety Release (SR), offering an intermediate/advanced approach to foundational contemporary dance praxis and movement methods. SR is a somatic application to dancing that cultivates body awareness and skeletal knowledge, bringing focus to the spine, purpose of the joints and usage with ease, use of breath and releasing frozen tension in the body to find deeper levels of movement efficiency. Hosted and facilitated by SR founder, B.J. Sullivan, and SR Master Teachers Billy J. Hawkains III, Caitlyn Schrader, and kt williams, this five-day intensive is designed for dance educators, professional dancers, and college-level dance students (undergraduate and graduate) who are looking to deepen their practice and dive into core principles of SR technique. Throughout the intensive, you will engage in personal investigations, share in rich dialogue, and partake in sessions in technique, theory, repertory, somatic practices and more.

Options for Full Intensive, Half Intensive, and Drop-ins.

Full day options have all sessions included: somatic practice, SR technique class, repertory, theory, & more, 9am-5pm

Half day options are morning sessions only: somatic practice and SR technique class, 9am-12pm

The morning sessions are split evenly between an hour in each; SR somatic practice intro, SR floor work, and SR movement combinations and traveling phrases. The warm-up will function as a somatic movement laboratory and will progress into standing and physically rigorous traveling patterns that challenge directionality, weight shift, counterbalance, and suspended movement. The afternoon sessions will be referenced and connected to the morning sessions and will continue to develop on SR’s applications in sessions devoted to one or more of the following: somatic practices, pedagogy, repertory, theory, and/or dance making.

Option for College Credit & UNCG Housing available.
